Mesa County prepares to count homeless
The annual homeless count begins on January 22nd.
Having accurate numbers is essential in providing enough funding for assistance programs in Mesa County.
How many people are homeless in the Grand Valley, how many are staying in shelters, and how many live on the streets, their cars, or abandoned buildings?
Those are all questions homeless advocates are hoping to answer during a three day survey.
It’s a HUD mandate that once a year Colorado determines actual numbers of homeless individuals.
A survey will ask people where they slept on January 22nd, followed by questions specific to our area.
“We have a unique homeless population,” Mollie Woodard, with Homeward Bound Homeless Shelter, said. “Through these surveys it allows us to really reach out, get everybody's information.”
The numbers and information collected from the survey will demonstrate the funding needed for local assistance programs, as well as raise public awareness about the Grand Valley's homeless population.
