Man involved in accidental shooting pleads guilty
A man who was showing off a handgun when it accidentally discharged and wounded a stranger in an adjoining motel room has pleaded guilty to several charges.
26-year-old Zachariah McCullough pleaded guilty Friday to attempted illegal discharge of a firearm, third-degree assault and violation of probation terms. His sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 13.
An arrest affidavit says McCullough was showing off his revolver at the Mesa Inn in Grand Junction on Sept. 29, 2012, when the weapon accidentally discharged, "blasting a large hole" in the wall.
Twenty-year-old Juan Lara, who was staying in the adjacent room, was hit in the shoulder by the errant round.
When the shooting occurred, McCullough was serving probation after failing to register as a sex offender.
