A man was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital for an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
It started as a routine traffic stop for speeding just before 8 pm Saturday night near 29 Road and Pinyon Ave.
A deputy pulled over a vehicle with two men inside, when the deputy saw that the passenger was bleeding from his head.
The man told the deputy he had accidentally shot himself at his home, and that his friend was driving him to St. Mary's hospital.
Ben Carnes of the Mesa County’s Sheriff’s Office said, "The vehicle pulled over and the driver jumped out of the car yelling that the passenger had been shot, we contacted the passenger of the vehicle and he appeared to have a single gun shot wound to the head. The passenger was awake and conscious."
The man was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
Authorities are processing the vehicle and investigating the incident.
