President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden made an announcement earlier today regarding new gun regulations.
President Obama called on congress to pass new laws including:
- a ban on assault rifles
- a ban on gun magazines over 10 rounds
- tougher penalties on gun dealers who break the law
- a requirement of background checks on all gun sales including stores, auctions, and conventions.
The president used his executive power to issue 23 executive orders including:
- improving gun safety training
- creating a national database of shared information of mental health
We wanted to know what you think about the new regulations recommended by the president and vice president.
Today we heard mixed reactions in Grand Junction. Here's what a few of you had to say.
“I own guns. I believe we have the right to bear arms. I think that we need to be an armed citizenry or they would've never have put that in the original constitution but I have a hard time understanding why we need weapons that kills lots and lots and lots of people” said Rudy Roybal of Grand Junction.
“I do believe that they are good suggestion obviously with the tragedies that have recently. We need to do something to come to some sort of compromise to keep people safe” said Tyler Morey of Grand Junction.
“I do agree with having a mandatory background checks. I think that's probably a good idea. What I worry about though with the ban on assault rifles and the limits is that criminals can get a hold of these guns. They don't necessarily follow the rules anyway” explained Rachel Green of Grand Junction.
