A local man says he's had several close calls at a dangerous intersection in Grand Junction and now he says he wants something to be done about it.

The intersection is at the corner of Mayfield Drive and Broadway in the Redlands. A man who drives through this intersection every week says state engineers need to take a closer look at this area and fix what he says, quite literally, is an accident waiting to happen.

Alan Story travels through this intersection each Sunday to pick up his friends for church. On one of his first trips he nearly had a head on crash but he didn't think much of it until the next week.

"The next Sunday I went back and almost had another head on and I got to wondering about it so I went out there and looked at the road" said Story.

Story says several of his friends have had close encounters in that same spot. Those traveling east and westbound both get into the center lane creating the hazard. A hazard that prompted story to notify state engineers.

"They said they'd look into it and he said well, we took aerial photographs and turned in there three times" said Story.

Engineers said they didn't see a problem but Story suggested how the problem be fixed.

"I told them that I would paint the stripes myself or else have an eagle scout paint them for a merit badge" explained Story.

Engineers say they try to assess and improve as many roads as possible. Mesa County Public Works has 20 projects this year costing $17 million. They rate roads and intersections based on two main components… safety and capacity.

"We study a lot of our roads. We watch all the intersections and from that data we determine which ones that we'll be going after for that year" explained Pete Baier, Director of Public Works for Mesa County.

Public Works also looks at areas where there's economic development which increases the amount of traffic and the need for more roads. However they still welcome help from community members.

"When folks call in, we'll do a study of a certain road or area to determine where it falls in the list that we have" said Baier.

In the meantime, Story says he's still waiting for something to be done to the area of Mayfield and Broadway.

"It’s real dangerous. You know, I could lose my life" said Story.
