Banks on the Western Slope could also be susceptible to similar cyber attacks but they say they've taken extra precautions to protect their customers.

Cyber attackers will always be out there trying to hack into computer servers and access your information, but many businesses, including banks, are fighting back to keep that confidential information safe.

Banks and credits unions are a big target for cyber thieves due to all the sensitive customer information kept on file. That's why they have computer experts install special hardware and software to block the criminals.

“We perform testing to make sure that all of the hardware and software is configured properly and that the typical points of entry for data theft have all been covered and are locked down”, said Rob Benjamin, Director of Managed Services at Networks Unlimited.

Experts also warn people that most cases of identity theft occur due to individual mistakes and people who don't have firewalls or virus protection on their personal computers make themselves an easy target.

With so much personal information being passed around on computers and cell phones these days, these types of problems will become more common in the next few years and making it extra important to remain vigilant.
