GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

Highway 50 was reopened Thursday night after a possible explosive had authorities on high-alert.

Around 5:00 p.m. Thursday, a CDOT employee notices a suspicious object on a pole at the Dillon Pinnacles overlook area.

The Colorado State Patrol was called to the scene and a trooper determined the unknown object could pose a threat to public safety.

Troopers decided to close Highway 50 in both directions from Montrose to Gunnison and called in a HAZMAT crew and the Grand Junction Bomb Squad to further investigate.

Authorities said the bomb squad determined the contents of the mysterious object were not explosive or hazardous.

The object was taken into custody for further testing; the investigation is ongoing.

Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol said Highway 50 was closed from 7:30 p.m. until 10:25 p.m. on Thursday.
