How to register to vote

Are you registered to vote?  If not, you're running out of time!  The deadline to register to vote in Colorado is October 9th.  

To paraphrase Franklin Delano Roosevelt, no one will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except themselves, if they choose not to vote. 

"Sometimes people will tell me that one vote doesn't count, but I have seen races where one actually decided whether or not that motion passed, whether or not that amendment passed," said Catherine Lenhart, Elections Director for Mesa County.

With November's election around the corner, her office is becoming increasingly busy with people looking to register. 

We took a trip down to the office on Wednesday to go through the process. 

Lenhart describes the registration form:

"On here, it asks if you are a US citizen, if you are eighteen, which are two requirements in order to register to vote. You would need to fill out your contact information. So, you have your name address, birth date, gender is on here."

"In order to register to vote, if you have a Colorado driver's license or Colorado ID, we're going to need to see that number," she added.

If you don't have a valid Colorado ID, you can use the last four digits of your social security number and have to fill out a special form. 

"Then it goes into the address portion, which is very critical for voting because voting has to do with where you reside and what kind of ballot style you receive."

It took us less than five minutes to register and we were out the door.

"I think it's incredibly important that everyone vote in this election and we are hoping to beat Mesa County's personal general election's turnout percentage which is ninety two percent. So that's going to be very difficult. It's going to take everybody, almost everybody anyway to beat that turnout, but we are really hoping we can do it," Lenhart added.

Even if you have already registered to vote, they are also asking everyone to update their current address, which you can do online, at the office or even at the polling place. 

Again, the registration deadline in Colorado is October 9th.
