"There needs to be teacher supervision and absolutely not put up with any grinding whatsoever," said Sarah Nelson.
Sarah Nelson's concerns have not gone unnoticed at Grand Junction High School. School administrators and student council members are in the process of making some changes.
"It's just time to tighten things up a little bit," said Student Body President Ryan Gibb. Ryan Gibb, president of the student council says the grinding and sexual dancing is a problem.
"It has grown into a problem that maybe could have been stopped a few years ago," said Gibb.
But he's quick to say that's not all their school should be known for. "We're not just hooligans running around getting dirty on the dance floor," he said.
Gibb says he doesn't want too many regulations to go into effect at school dances because those dances are the biggest school fundraisers of the year. Now because of the grinding, teachers are threatening to no longer chaperone the dances.
"They are really embarrassed to be affiliated with dances where this is happening; and they just basically said that they won't sponsor our dances anymore and it you don't have sponsors, you don't have dances," said Gibb.
Principal Jon Bilbo says that explaining what type of dancing will and will not be tolerated should be enough. "We've just chose to address it and say grinding, you all know what grinding is; we don't expect it to happen. We don't expect to see people bending over," said Bilbo.
School officials are now looking to the student council for ideas on how to stop grinding, but Gibb says he can only do so much.
"Administration has to enforce it and that's really where the final say is going to come. I can say what I want to do all day long but until the higher up people say this is how it is, that's what's going to happen," said Gibb.
Sarah Nelson surveyed 212 students in her literacy classes to get their opinions on grinding at school dances; each grade was questioned and the results were collected by a teacher. Some results from Sarah Nelson's survey below:
20% of students who do not grind report feeling pressure to grind
64% of students have stated they have danced sexually
15% of students report feeling peer pressure to grind
Statements by students:
"people doing the nasty behind the curtains"- female, 17
"people are taking grinding too far, people trying to have sex"- female 17
"teachers who interrupt sexy time"- male, 17
