Just when flu vaccines are in high demand, people are having a hard time getting their hands on them.

Although 128 million doses have been distributed nationally, vaccine supply here in Grand Junction is dwindling.    

It may seem like the flu season should be winding down but the Centers for Disease Control says the sickness typically spikes in February and can even linger until May.

Widespread flu outbreaks have been reported in 43 states, including Colorado.

Statewide over 500 people have been hospitalized with the flu.

Here in Mesa County luckily only 11 people have been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.

"We're certainly seen an increase in people coming in especially to the emergency with flu symptoms. This year’s flu does seem to have impacted young children and young adults. Some years the stream is more transmittable," said Riggle.

People who lined up at the mesa county health department had to wait about an hour to receive their flu shots.

The community hospital and mesa county health department told us they still have some vaccine available.

Organizations like Walgreens said they were running low on vaccines.

Today, Rite Aid told us they were completely out, but except another shipment soon.

Primary care said they're also out of vaccines, and don't expect to be receiving anymore.

Flu shots for veterans are being given out at the Grand Junction VA for free.

Hospital officials added that it's important to remain at home if you're experiencing flu like symptoms, and to visit a doctor if you're experiencing problems breathing and eating.
