In a move that may come as a surprise to some Coloradans, Governor John Hickenlooper says “the time is right” for lawmakers in the state to consider new gun control measures.
This is the firmest stance the Governor has shown since he took office, and it comes in the wake of several high-profile shootings, including the Aurora theater massacre.
Until now, the governor, a Democrat, has pushed back on calls to review the state’s gun laws and even alienated some in his party when he said stricter laws wouldn’t have prevented the Aurora killings.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Hickenlooper said the legislative session coming up in January would be a good time for lawmakers to take up a debate on the issue. He did not, however, call for specific legislation to be discussed.
