No one was injured, but there were some nervous moments when a loaded gun showed up at a local middle school Thursday.
Police were called to Delta Middle School early in the afternoon after reports of a loaded handgun being brought into the school.
Police say they conducted an in-depth investigation and were able to retrieve the gun at a location off school property.
They say the juvenile student who had the gun was cooperative and was placed into protective custody without further incident, and that the students were not threatened or injured.
The handgun's owner was issued a summons for child abuse.
In a statement from the Delta Police Department, a spokeswoman says Chief Robert Thomas is "pleading with the community, specifically handgun owners, to be responsible by securing their weapons in a gun safe, gun box, or secure their weapons with a gun cable or safety trigger lock. A tragic event or loss of life involving guns can be avoided if we work together as a community to make gun safety a priority in our home.”
The Delta Police Department says they have gun safety locks available for City of Delta residents. The locks are available during regular business hours.
