Grand Junction father kills his son
A 48 year old Grand Junction man is dead after being shot in the chest after a fight with his father.
Garth Meier was found dead at his home on 29 and 1/2 Road early Wednesday morning.
Police are still investigating Meier's death but the coroner says it was a homicide.
Neighbors told us today they were shocked but have seen the father and son act out before.
"It's kind of scary because you think you know your neighbors, but I guess you don't," said neighbor Noel Payan.
Payan said he didn't know the Meiers well but he was shocked to hear about an overnight fight and shooting that close to his home.
"I always thought they got along good because they live together, I mean he lived with his mom and dad and they ran a business together," said Payan.
Payan has lived here for more than twelve years.
And he says the Meier family has lived in the neighborhood even longer.
"It’s really shocking its like a nightmare to me, you just you don't know people as good as you think you do I guess," said Payan.
But Payan says other neighbors who know the family better have heard of some friction between the father and son.
"I guess sometime they had their arguments and stuff but he never thought something like this could happen. You hear about stuff all over but we've never had anything happen this close to our house," said Payan.
It's very quiet in the neighborhood in the wake of the tragedy, but neighbors say that's pretty normal.
One woman told us she found out the news on her walk this morning. She says now all she can do is wait to find out what exactly happened at the home that's just down the street from her own.
“It kind of troubles me just to hear about it... we all get along we watch out for each other we watch our children, each others homes. We love our neighbors, we all stick together,” said another neighbor Janet Scheer.
Payon added, "I really feel bad for his mom. My heart feels for her because I can just imagine what she's going through, her husband in trouble and her son dead. I just can't imagine something like that happening, especially this close to home."
Police did recover the weapon on scene when they arrived.
Two adults were taken to the police station for questioning.
No one has been arrested yet and authorities aren't looking for any other suspects at this point.
