Gj City Council approves fee increases for development
Impacts will hit April
New Developments in Grand Junction will be seeing a fee increase. It could impact commercial business as early as next month.
The Grand Junction City Council was torn on the issue, but it was passed with a 4 to 3 vote. The plan will affect new developments for the next three years.
The fee is called Transportation Capacity Payments or TCP. The city currently collects 25% of the cost of transportation infrastructure and now it will collect 37%.
The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce said it is not a good move for new business and will actually discourage business development in the city.
Diane Schwenke with the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce said, "The economy is fragile, we want to encourage business growth. what we view that happened wit the city increasing fees was very detrimental to the overall business climate."
Fees will not increase in the greater downtown and North Avenue areas. There will be some fee breaks on businesses locating in existing building and new construction in buildings more than one story.
Schwenke said now Fruita and Mesa County will have lower commercial business fees, which could hinder more business from investing in Grand Junction.
