With the fiscal cliff looming, a group of mothers from Grand Junction marched to Congressman Tipton's office Friday afternoon to deliver an important message; Moms and families can't "Bear" more than their fair share.

MomsRising is a national group that wants Congress to end the Bush-era tax cuts to the wealthy, and stop tax hikes on the middle class.

A local chapter of MomsRising gathered in front of the Old County Courthouse in Grand Junction at 12:00 p.m. Friday. The women marched to Congressman Tipton's office to deliver their message.

The want Congressman Tipton to help pass the Middle Class Tax Cut Act before it's too late.

The group states, according to the Congressional Budget Office, extending the Middle Class Tax Cuts would boost Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 1.3% next year, while extending tax cuts on income over $250,000  will only boost GDP by an additional 0.01%.

"A couple thousand dollars means going out to dinner more often and buying a little bit more for Christmas and maybe going to Glenwood Springs once in awhile," said DeAnne Stanberry, who marched on Friday with MomsRising.

"So, those kinds of things are important to my family and I think here in Mesa County there's a lot of families who can identify with that," Stanberry added.

The group showed up at Tipton's office on Friday to deliver its message. They arrived at 12:30 p.m. and waited around until 1:00 p.m. but nobody was in the office at the time and the door was locked.

KJCT contacted Congressman Tipton's office. His staff said he was traveling Friday and wouldn't be in his Grand Junction office.

However, he did release a statement concerning the fiscal cliff.

“Unless legitimate spending cuts and tax reform are part of the solution, and not smoke and mirrors gimmicks, increasing revenue will have no effect on solving the spending crisis and decreasing the size of government. We did not tax ourselves into debt; we spent ourselves there as the size of government doubled over the past decade. Our focus must be growing the economy, not continuing to grow government.

“I am hopeful that Republicans and Democrats will come together to pass a bipartisan solution to the fiscal cliff that includes legitimate spending cuts at its core, avoids sequestration, and initiates comprehensive tax reform while preventing one of the largest tax increases on Americans in history from going into effect.

“With double-digit unemployment still affecting much of the nation, including many areas in Colorado, growing the economy must be a central goal of any solution. I believe a solution that would allow businesses and families the flexibility to succeed by keeping tax rates low and providing economic certainty through responsible spending and tax reforms would help jumpstart economic growth and create jobs, while responsibly addressing the $16.3 trillion national debt.”—Rep.
