GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -

Grand Junction resident Nathan Bionaz, 31, allegedly beat his dog last week and then threatened to kill neighbors who witnessed it.

Neighbors say he gets really rowdy and aggressive when he drinks and is constantly causing trouble in the neighborhood.

"We've seen him up on the roof, and in the shed with machetes,” a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous said. “He just always does real weird stuff in the yard... throws things, plants those dead trees."

It all started with a dead tree in Bionaz’s yard. That’s where Red [the puppy] was chained up. Neighbors say they got involved and later the dog tried to escape, but that's when things got really violent."

"He started kickin’ the dog and the dog took off down the street and he started slamming the dog down, hitting him with rocks, throwing beer cans at him," a neighbor said.

Mesa County Animal Services took Red Thursday night and is nursing him back to health.

"They evaluated the dog for injuries and I believe that some pain medications were prescribed for the animal," Animal Services Manager Shauna Humphreys said.

Humphreys says you should call animal services if you ever think an animal is being abused. But if the animal is in immediate danger, she says to call 911.

"Abuse can be anything from the animal not having food and water to the animal being confined in a hot car on a hot day to somebody physically abusing the dog," she said.

Bionaz was charged with cruelty to animals, resisting arrest, obstruction of a peace officer and five counts of intimidating a witness. He was taken into custody and held on a $30,000 bond. He posted bond and returned home Saturday.

"I was real upset when I seen his dog and the way he treated it,” a neighbor said. “I didn't like it."
