G.J.F.D. go pink for October

The Grand Junction Fire Department is teaming up with a local cancer survivor to help spread awareness of the disease and raise funds for the ongoing fight.

They've declared this month as "Pink October".

Firefighters will be wearing pink t-shirts the entire month to draw some attention from the community.

Limited edition t-shirts will also be sold to the public, with all proceeds going to "Delaney Donates".

Delaney Clements was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 but is now in remission and wants to pay it forward.

According to Derek Trombetta, a Grand Junction firefighter, another reason they were interested in Pink October, is because of the strong correlation between firefighters developing cancer.

"We know that we kind of have a large support, a large body so that we can actually get the word out there. It's a pretty striking visual image when you see firefighters walk around in pink shirts. So that was a big part, you know, that we actually felt that we could make a difference in something, we could help do our part," said Trombetta.   

"A lot of guys it's kind of near and dear to their hearts too, as far as being touched personally by cancer," he added.

You can help the cause by purchasing your own limited edition pink t-shirt for $20.

They're available at all Grand Junction fire stations.

According to fire officials, the money raised will provide care packages to help others with the emotional and financial support needed to cope with the disease.
