FRUITVALE, Colo. -

A meeting was held in Fruitvale Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. to inform the community of the future of the post office located at 2923 North Avenue.

Residents were happy to hear that the post office is not closing, it's just relocating to a larger building.

A real estate specialist for the post office says a lot of smaller offices are having trouble paying the rent because of low mail volume, but for the office in Fruitvale, the case is just the opposite.

They have a 6,000-square-foot building and they need a facility that's 12,000 to 15,000-square-feet to house additional resources.

"We all know the post office is losing a lot of money and we're trying to keep as many light on as we can, and one of the efforts that's going on nationwide is to consolidate several functions into the larger buildings that we have, we're doing that in Fruitvale," said Garry Mattox, who works for the post office as a real estate specialist.

Officials with the post office expect the move to happen within nine months, and they think the new office will be about a mile away, or less, from the current location.

The Grand Junction Postmaster says that nobody needs to worry about their zip code changing or their PO Box number becoming different due to the move.

Mattox says they'll keep the community informed throughout the moving process.

A national real estate firm is canvassing the area to determine a good location for the new, larger office.
