Funeral services held for Cmdr. Assenmacher

Commander Greg Assenmacher, one of Grand Junction’s most respected officers, was laid to rest today.

The police department says he won’t soon be forgotten, announcing an award to be given in Greg's honor.

Commander Assenmacher was with the Grand Junction Police Department for over thirty years.

His family, friends, and co-workers were shocked when they heard he died suddenly while working out at home. But they were not surprised by the huge turn out and support at his funeral services on Monday.

Chief of Police John Camper says in many ways Commander Assenmacher was as the face of the department.

He leaves behind an incredible legacy.

“People are reeling from the loss of such an incredible guy. On the other hand. it was all-in-all kind of an up beat ceremony and a chance to laugh a little bit in between the tears,” Chief Camper said.

During the services, Chief Camper announced the start of the Gregory Assenmacher Community Service Award.

It’s a medal and a ribbon that will be given out annually to officers that embody the community spirit and volunteerism that Greg was so incredible at.
