GRAND JUNCTION, Colo., -

Any student who needs outside assistance paying for college has to fill out the FAFSA form, but it can be very confusing. That's why organizers of Sunday's event wanted to offer that free help.

"We're giving away about $20,000 in scholarships so that's always a great incentive to come and get free help," College In Colorado Director Misti Ruthven said.

College Goal Sunday has been helping families plan for college for the past six years.

"The biggest concern for students across the country as well as here in Colorado is can i pay for it. Can i afford to go to college? so we know that sometimes the FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid that's the universal form can really sometimes be confusing and we're really trying to take any of the fear out of it," Ruthven said.

And organizers say the best way to do that is to ask them questions.

"Because we see the large majority of folks that have special situations a lot of times they won't ask and they'll fill out their form incorrectly which means they're not potentially getting the money we tell them they can get to go to school," Ruthven said.

One high school senior says she knows how important it is for her to get a college degree. So she is going to do whatever it takes to make that happen

"It is going to cost a lot but there's a lot of ways to get help and you can always end up paying it off," Grand Junction High School Senior, Emily Robbins said.

"It's so competitive out there," parent Jim Robbins said. "If you don't have a college degree I think you're shot, I think you almost have to have it anymore."

"It would mean a lot because you get better jobs and a better education," Emily said. "It's kind of important to me to a higher education."

Representatives say everyone should fill out a FAFSA form, even if they are still on the fence.

"If you're thinking about going to college there's no downside in finding out more about the process and completing the financial aid application and completing your admissions applications," Ruthven said.

Students are encouraged to submit their FAFSA form as close to the first of the year as they can. This will allow them to receive as much financial aid as possible.

But, the deadline to get your FAFSA form turned in is March 1st.
