Figure in '01 slayings gets outings from hospital
A man found not guilty by reason of insanity in the 2001 shooting deaths of four people in western Colorado has been given permission to periodically leave the state mental hospital under supervision.
The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reported Tuesday (http://tinyurl.com/aeua6of ) that a judge approved the outings last week for 53-year-old Steven Michael Stagner.
Stagner was accused of killing four people and wounding three at an RV park in Rifle. He's been in the custody of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo since his trial ended in 2002.
The judge says Stagner may not return to Rifle or Garfield County except for court hearings.
He's also forbidden from going places where large numbers of Hispanics are likely to be present. Most of the shooting victims were immigrants from Mexico.
