GRAND JUNCTION, Colo -

Western Slope federal courthouses will stay open, despite a coming round of cost cutting measures.

Earlier this year, both the U.S. District Court in Grand Junction and in Durango was placed on a list of 60 courthouses across the country being considered for possible closure by the federal judiciary.

Closing courthouse doors would've been a big hit to residents here, who would've had to travel to the Front Range to have their cases heard.

Senator Mark Udall calls the decision a victory for Western Colorado.

Budget cuts will, however, take their toll in other areas, with closures to federal court sites in six southern states.

The closures are expected to save the federal judiciary about $1 million each year in rental costs.
