Dooms Day predictions don't phase locals

People aren't just flocking to the Mayan ruins before the supposed end of the world. Some are stocking up on supplies in preparation.

Most people around here aren't taking it too seriously. While some around the country may be headed for their bunkers, folks in western Colorado are playing it cool... at least for now.

"To each his own", said Lea Lundquist, resident of Grand Junction.

That's the reaction most people around town gave us when we asked them about the dooms dayers. It's all in response to the end of the Mayan calendar, on December 21st, 2012. Or as you might call it, Friday. Lundquist has her own reasoning for the abrupt end of the calendar.

"I think the fellow who had the skill and the knowledge to put that calendar together died and there was nobody else who could do it that followed", explained Lundquist.

But not everyone is so nonchalant about the predicted apocalypse. Some people are actually stocking up; something Lindquist says isn't a bad idea regardless of what happens.

"It's always good to put reserves back for whatever is to come", she says.

Still, most people don't exactly subscribe to this end of the world scenario and for them Friday will be just another day.

"Working today. Working tomorrow. (Going about my day) as normal, absolutely", said Donna Page, resident of Mesa.

The actual time that the world would end for us here in western Colorado is 4:11AM tomorrow morning. But just in case it doesn't happen, you can tune in tomorrow to KJCT News 8 this morning, if only to make sure we're still here.
