Dog named 'Jake' saves woman from fire, then dies
Layton fire officials say a 13-year-old dog saved a woman's life by waking her up as her house was on fire.
The Standard-Examiner of Ogden reports (http://bit.ly/YDc4F6 ) that the dog came into a room where Ron Barningham's wife was napping Wednesday afternoon. The dog "Jake" whined until she woke up.
She escaped the smoke-filled room by climbing out a second-floor window and jumped to the ground. But she couldn't lift Jake, a mix of golden retriever and labrador who weighs 120 pounds.
She called for him to jump, but he didn't and he died in the fire. Barningham tells the Standard -Examiner that his wife was distraught over Jake's death and didn't want to give her name.
All the contents in the house were destroyed. The cause is under investigation.
