GRAND JUNCTION, Colo -

The first day of school means big crowds and because District 51's bus policies have changed, some parents are worried traffic around schools will be worse than ever.

Christy McGee, with School District 51, says, "There may be more people dropping their kids off and taking their kids to school by car, so there may be more cars in our parking lots."

A total of 16 bus routes have been eliminated.

Now there’s no bus services at all offered to Orchard Avenue Elementary students.

"Parents are anticipating there's going to be a lot of problems," Drew Mayer said.

Mayer is the president of the school's parent teacher association.

He says parents are worried about safety and increased traffic.

"No one knows what the ramifications are of not having bus service and we just don't know if it’s going to be a smooth process or not,” Mayer said. “Most parents feel its not going to be."

District 51 says the first day of school isn't an accurate picture of the new bus policy's effect on the entire school year.

"There will be congestion the first day of school, that's a normal first day of school,” McGee said. “It doesn't have anything to do necessarily with the busing changes."

It’ll be a couple weeks before the district will be able to evaluate any problems with traffic at schools.

As for Monday, police offices will be helping.

Kate Porras, with GJPD, says, "They’ll be monitoring those areas to see if there are any problems. We’re not anticipating any problems at this point."

"We’re going to have to see how that works. I think no one knows and so we'll see,” Mayer said.
