District 51 addresses marijuana use

The school board is addressing the controversial issue and the sticky subject of marijuana use, side effects and habits.

Despite the recent passing of amendment 64, the policy regulating marijuana use for adults over the age of 21, the school board was actually planning on mailing out an educational document before Election Day.

The board had to hold off on sending out the pamphlet to avoid the appearance of using public funds to push back against the passage of amendment 64.

But now that the decision has been made and the amendment passed. Currently, the school board sending out those documents to the household of each student in the district.

The school board hopes the information will remind kids and parents that despite recent changes, school policies haven't changed.

District 51 School Board President, Greg Mikolai, said, “I'm sure that there are some community members and parents that think amendment 64 has changed something in district 51, and I will flatly tell everyone it has not changed a thing in terms of board policy concerning marijuana use.”

School board members hope the pamphlet will help inform and remind folks that district 51 will use the same disciplinary measures that they always have.

It should be arriving within the next couple of days.
