D51 forming safety committee

School District 51 is reviewing its safety practices with the help of the community.

It’s forming a committee of local residents, law enforcement, first responders, and even mental health professionals to explore new options to keep students safe.

District 51 is hoping to have a working group of 15 to 20 members in place in just the next couple weeks.

What the group will do is take a look at current safety practices and see whether those guidelines are the best or if something else would work better.

It’ll also review suggestions from community members and present them to the school board.

“One of the things that are important to know is that our current practices aren't broken,” Tim Leon, D51’s director of safety and transportation, said.  “We just want to see if there is anything else that we can be doing better to create a safe environment.”

You can request to be on the school safety committee by contacting District 51 through its website.

The first meeting will be on February 6^th, and on the 19th it'll present its findings to the school board.

If someone wants to be on the committee but can't, they can still submit suggestion to the district.

Officials say they hope to represent every voice in the community the best they can.
