We finally have some answers about how those two little boys from Palisade died after being left alone near Powderhorn.

The Mesa County Coroner's office says it was hyperthermia, or overheating, that killed two-year-old William Jensen and four-year-old Tyler Jensen.

Their mother left them in her running SUV while she went to visit a friend.

Officials are calling the deaths an accident, but it's up to the district attorney to decide if their mother should face criminal charges.

“It’s highly unusual for the coroner to call something like this an accident instead of a homicide,” Pete Hautzinger, Mesa County District Attorney, said.  “It’s a complicated and difficult situation. I want to take my time, be as careful as I can, and make the best decision that I possibly can.”

Hautzinger doesn't anticipate having any decision or making a final call until early next week.

He does say crimes against children are taken very seriously.

Under Colorado Law, It’s considered child abuse to put a child in a situation where they have the potential of being harmed.

This criminal investigation continues.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office has sent the information collected to the district attorney. Those details remain sealed from the public.
