Statue removed from Dixie State College campus
ST. GEORGE, Utah -

Emotions were mixed in one Utah town following the removal of a Confederate soldier statue from the Dixie State College campus.

The Spectrum of St. George reports (http://bit.ly/UJZJiN ) the statue by area artist Jerry Anderson was taken down Thursday following debate about the image and its implications.

Some people say they were offended by the Confederate flag on the statue.

They saw it as a sign of racism and discrimination.

But former alumni president Connor Shakespeare says he's sad the statue was removed.

He says the image of a soldier reaching from a horse to a wounded soldier depicts an act of great sacrifice.

The college has also been debating whether its name carries negative Deep South connotations.
