After two 'unpleasant surprises' questioning one of their candidate's work record and detailing his personal bankruptcy, the Mesa County Republican Party is demanding that Jared Wright answer questions about his character.
Last month, an internal investigation was launched at the Fruita Police Department where District 54 candidate Wright previously worked. Last weekend, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel published a report that Wright had filed for bankruptcy in 2011.
Both are issues Wright tells KJCT News 8 he planned to first tell voters, but both times he was beaten to the punch.
Friday, Party Chair Ruth Ehlers asked Wright to "reconnect with voters, the Republican Party and your Executive Board" at a party function.
"It is unfortunate the voters did not have this information before the elections took place," Ehlers said of Wright's recent headlines. "We find ourselves with a candidate working to restore his credibility."
It's a challenge that Wright says he is up for. "[These issues are] not going to affect my intentions of running and to continue earning people's support," he said in an interview on Monday. "Ever since the news surfaced, I've been getting calls from several people offering their support."
But, at least some party leaders have their doubts.
Describing Wright's recognition as a candidate an "obligation," Ehlers said he still has a lot of work ahead of him. "Jared also needs to convey a solid case for his political and legislative vision."
The party says Wright is their candidate because the voters have spoken. Wright won three elections from caucuses through primaries to solidify himself as the Republican nominee for this seat.
"At this point, it is up to Jared Wright to decide if he wants to continue his campaign or step aside," Ehlers said. "We are confident Mesa County Republicans will stay focused on issues and substance... will continue to support their party. And, we are confident of a Republican victory on November 6."
