A local brewery is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint by working with a Grand Junction recycling program.

The manager of Kannah Creek Brewing Company says the restaurant has been recycling cardboard for years, but it's been looking to do the same for all of its waste.

The brewery has teamed up with Commercial Refuse Service, Grand Junction's first single-stream recycling service, to take its green program to the next level.

Two times a week, C.R.S. will make a stop at Kannah Creek to pick up items such as plastic products, glass, aluminum, metal and newspapers.

It's a task the restaurant wasn't able to accomplish on its own.

"It's difficult to recycle these days, especially here in Grand Junction. We're so far away from Denver and so far away from any metropolitan city, that it's difficult to be able to recycle everything that we consume and use here in the restaurant and brewery," said Ryan Hendershot, Manager at Kannah Creek.

In the future, Hendershot said the restaurant wants to turn food waste into compost, implement high-efficiency lighting, and reduce power and water usage at the restaurant.
