Boy identified in suicide near Taylorsville school
Authorities have identified the 14-year-old student who shot himself outside his school in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville.
Unified Police say David Q. Phan committed suicide Thursday on a corner of the school grounds in front of several other students.
Granite School District released a statement saying Phan had been in counseling for significant personal issues.
However, the student previously denied reports now circulating on social media that he had been subject to bullying.
Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley confirms that Phan was released early from Bennion Junior High at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
Horsley says he can't discuss the reasons for the early dismissal.
Police say Phan went home, retrieved a gun and returned to a corner of the school grounds.
