The sights, sounds and tastes of Christmas come to you this coming weekend in Palisade.
Palisade’s Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration kicks off Friday night followed by a Saturday full of everything from wagon rides, to church bells ringing, to carolers singing, to the warmth of good food, the joy of Santa Claus, easy shopping, contests, music and so much more!
“I’m helping put on the Santa’s Workshop for the kids," said Kelbie Stahl, a student and council member from Palisade High School. " It is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on December 8th and it’ll be at Portell Computers. It is no cost and we’ll have three different crafts."
“I heard a rumor that Santa’s going to be there," Stahl continued. "You can probably get a picture taken with him.”
Melinda Eastham, owner of Mumzel’s Crumpets, Cups and Cones is the founder of the Olde Fashioned Christmas Tea that is so close to her heart.
"We are selling advance tickets," Eastham said. "You can pick them up either here at Mumzel’s or you can pick them up at the Chamber. They‘ll be ten dollars for an adult ticket and five dollars for a child. The times are 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December the 8th.”
Yes, there’s special Christmas Tea but she’ll be serving more.
“We will be having a variety of sandwiches including traditional cucumber sandwiches and cream cheese sandwiches and then we’ll have an assortment of savories and sweets,” Eastham added.
Charlene Weidner and her husband John, in period outfits, will be among those bringing Palisade’s colorful history alive in special, guided tours!
These tours will take place on Saturday, December 8th as part of the Old Fashioned Christmas event," said Weidner. "There’s no charge. We will accept a donation to the Historical Society.”
Newly appointed Chamber Director, Juliann Adams says Friday night’s Olde Fashioned Christmas kick-off will get you in the holiday mood.
“On Friday evening, starting at 5:00 p.m. here at the plaza (in Palisade), right behind me you can see our wonderful town tree. The Taylor Serenaders will be coming down in a little parade starting about five o’clock and they will be singing Christmas carols. And there’s nothing sweeter than those little voices. They will come here to the plaza, they will sing their way and we will light the tree at 5:30 p.m.”
Then comes Saturday full of activities. And, so why the bowl in her hand?
“This signifies the soup challenge that will be going on during our Olde Fashioned Christmas," Adams said. "And people will be able to come out and try some wonderful soups and we have nine chefs this year so there’s a lot of competition going on. But there’s prizes involved, so the competition is high.”
But she says there’s a lot more…
“We have a silent auction that’s going on and it’s going to be held over at the open space next to Lupita’s Bizarre. The firemen are holding their annual chili cook-off. We have the car show going on. The cars, the old cars will be lined up down Main Street and there’s going to be lots of great things to see. And from there, you can go on to the vendors. We have an Olde Fashioned Market Place here on Main and 3rd. And right now, we are looking at over forty five vendors. So, lots of opportunity to come shopping and just stroll the Main Street just like you used to in the old days.”
Everyone joins in carols after they enjoy the magical ending of the celebration Saturday night.
“We will have a town parade with lots of wonderful floats and lights," Adams continued.
