State wildlife officials say a bald eagle was found shot to death and stuffed inside the crotch of a cottonwood tree in southern Utah.
KSL reports (http://bit.ly/135AWKU ) that authorities confirmed the bird was killed with a small-caliber rifle and hidden away.
Conservation officer Josh Pollock tells The Associated Press the immature eagle was found dead by an area resident Jan. 13.
Authorities have no suspects. They believe the bird was shot by a motorist near Junction in Piute County, about 175 miles south of Salt lake City.
State and federal laws prohibit the killing of bald eagles, a national symbol.
Pollock says that in an unrelated case of poaching, somebody shot a golden eagle in mid-January in neighboring Garfield County.
