Annual Mesa County Safety Fair

District 51 elementary school students learned an important lesson today about safety. Officials from the community headed out to Mesa Mall to teach the students ways to protect themselves in various situations.

There were over 2,000 people participating in the free fair. Kids could learn about almost anything and were encouraged interact with all of the fun gadgets. Highline Lake Park Manager Alen Martinez was in charge of the boat safety booth. He explained to the kids some of the dangers boating can cause and provided them with an idea of how to stay safe when out on the water this summer.

Martinez explained the activity, "So what we are doing is that we are actually having groups of kids come up and we have them try life jackets on that are too small, too large and just the right size; and just explain to them that wearing a life jacket that is too large and you are in a boat accident, when you hit the water... you are actually going to come out of that life jacket."

The car safety table was another popular booth. Children were able to hop into a cop car and practice putting on their seat belt. The children also were encouraged to keep all of the fun fireman hats and stickers they received to remind them that they should always be thinking about their safety.
