Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, and a local non-profit organization wants to honor his message as well as the victims of Sandy Hook Elementary.

AmeriCorps is asking Mesa County resident to join the nationwide movement known as "26 Acts of Kindness".

The '26' represents those who lost their lives in the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Coordinators said King's message of non-violence and tolerance to create equality ties in well with the 26 Acts of Kindness movement.

An act of kindness could be shoveling someone's sidewalk, donating blood, putting a coin in an expired parking meter, or cooking a warm meal for a busy family, for example.

Volunteers said any random act of kindness will make a difference in our community, and they hope the idea will catch on."

"[We hope] Throughout the year and past Martin Luther King Day, that in this community, that we can do that [random acts of kindness] for each other year-round, and that if somebody does it for you, you pass it along to somebody else," said Laura Switzer, program assistant for Mesa County Americorps.

AmeriCorps officials encourage the whole community to get involved in spreading kindness on Monday.
