RIFLE, Colo -- A smaller staff, fewer programs, and higher fees could all be part of Garfield Re-2 School District's next round of budget cuts, and it's not the first time.
"Over the last three years our budget has been cut by about three million dollars due to state budget cuts," Director of Districtwide Services, Theresa Hamilton said.
The district is preparing to make even more cuts this year because of a 50 million dollar cut back at the state level.
"That translates into additional cuts for the Garfield Re-2 School District," Hamilton said.
The school board is now in the process of finding the best way to save.
It’s possible that it'll need to drop spending by over a million dollars this year.
"We’re currently evaluating turning off the cooling in the gymnasiums and we're looking at four day work weeks," Hamilton said.
The district's director of finance says finding ways to save is harder this time than when the budget was tightened three years ago.
"The problem right now is we've already cut all the things that are the low hanging fruit,” Director of Finance, Christy Hamrick said. “That was even really tough to get to those decisions."
During the whole process, the district is hoping to hear from you.
"We’ll look to balance the needs of the community, of parents, of staff and of the kids when looking at whether or not we should increase fees or cut programs," Hamrick said. "They’re tough decisions for our school board and tough conversations, but in the end the hope is that we get to the right decision."
The school board hopes to know where all the cuts will be by the end of March.
