GRAND JUNCTION, Colo -- The Cruise Industry is bracing for a financial hit after the Costa Concordia ran aground this month. With 16 people confirmed dead and another 16 still missing the industry worries people won’t want to book a cruise. However, travelers on the Western Slope aren't so quick to say no to the cruise experience even with this recent disaster.
Traveler Lonnie Mayhugh says, “Accidents do happen and I would have no qualms about going on a cruise.”
This is the worst cruise ship disaster of recent times, but deadly accidents in the cruise industry are still very rare.
Yvonna Claeys, a Travel Agent with First Class Travel says, “It just isn't the norm. That's what we are telling people, it’s just as safe as it ever was.”
Most of the travelers we spoke with agree. “We have plane crashes and car accidents we keep doing those. So, I think if you want to go on a cruise you take a mild chance, but a 99% chance you'll be fine,” says Mayhugh.
Michele Tyrolt, a Flight Attendant, says, “I work in the travel industry that's my lively hood and it doesn't scare me away at all.”
Karla Collins has a cruise booked to Alaska. “There is hazards we could face everyday, so just live life and do it.,” says Collins.
First Class Travel in Grand Junction says it has had no cancellations so far. In fact, travel agents are seeing more people book cruises.
Claeys says, “I'm inundated with cruise requests, so for me it's a little bit surprising. I think a lot of people are looking for deals thinking that after this accident there are going to see a lot of price decreases, which we have not seen to date.”
Still though there are some people who are not going to take any chances.
Grace Powders, a Traveler, says, “I kind of thought it might be fun because we are semi retired and it was a consideration at one time, but it doesn't seem real reliable anymore. I think I would chose something else.”
Marilyn Ruland, a Traveler, says, “We've had three wonderful cruises and we've pretty much decided that those would be our last, but yes, this kind of cinched it.”
First Class Travel says people are still concerned about safety. They say more and more clients are coming up with emergency plans of their own, like deciding where to meet up if they get separated in a disaster. The more you are prepared First Class Travel says the better your vacation.
