GRAND JUNCTION, Colo -- Water was flowing through the streets of Grand Junction, but not through the faucets in roughly four hundred local homes.
Those living off 26 1/2 and G 1/2 road woke up early to find that something wasn’t right.
Home Owner Tami Cumpston says,” I came outside and looked and saw the road just kind of buckled and water kind of spouting up."
A large sink hole had formed in the middle of the road and officials say it's due to problems with the pipes.
"Ute Water discovered a waterline break in one of their main 18-inch lines,” Joseph Burtard with Ute Water Conservancy District said.
Its cold outside but the company says that's not what caused the damage.
"We have over 1,500 miles of pipeline distribution system. Its just an aging infrastructure,” Burtard said.
Customers living in the area remained without water for most of the day.
"We don't know how much damage was done or the cost of the damage."
Some residents living near the break now have more water in their homes then they bargained for.
When the waterline broke Thursday morning, it sent thousands of gallons of water rushing down a slope and into area homes.
"We looked out the front bedroom window and could see the water. I didn't see it raining so I thought where's the water coming from,” home owner LaDawn Wangelin said.
She watched as water surrounded her home.
"There’s not a thing you can do. You just watch it rise to your steps,” Wangelin said.
She’s not worried about damage to her house and even though her morning didn't as planned, LaDawn is staying optimistic.
"My backyard has become an ice skating rink," Wangelin said.
