GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- "If you come in now with a debit card or a credit card that won't go through we'll say sorry and ask you for another form of payment," local business owner Mike Morris.
Morris is the owner of Gamerz Planet in Grand Junction.
"You try to slide it through, the magnetic strip would not read," Morris said.
He didn't see it coming.
"Every merchant can just manually key in your number and we get back approved or declined."
After it happened earlier this summer, Morris received a notice from the bank.
"When we manually input it they don't know if we have the credit card, we are liable, we end up eating the money," Morris said.
The suspect reportedly came in the store multiple times in the same day and got away with about $1,500.
Grand Junction Police Department says fraud complaints come in frequently.
"It seems like almost on a daily basis we're getting some sort of a report of a fraud, if not at least weekly," GJPD spokesperson Kate Porras said.
The department says unfortunately businesses must evolve with criminals.
"People that are trying to fraudulently use credit cards, or fake checks, or fake bills can come up with a number of ways to try and pass that off," Porras said.
"We had never had any in four years and all of sudden we had multiple in one day but we being a small business, we quickly could adapt to it," Morris said.
But it's still hard for businesses to kiss the money good-bye.
"To have someone come in especially in a little mom and pop here in Grand Junction, does it hurt to lose a $1,000, $1,500 in just one day? Absolutely."
The police department says this investigation is open and they are actively looking to make an arrest. Police encourage you to contact them with tips as a business owner or an individual.
