PBS Gives Students Inside Look At TV News

POSTED: 6:43 pm MDT September 8, 2010
Lights, camera, action! Rocky Mountain PBS is giving some local kids a very unique opportunity.

Students from six Western Colorado elementary schools are preparing for this fall's Super School News program. Wednesday they toured the PBS studios and learned more about what it takes to put a newscast together.

Each group of students will spend the next couple months preparing a two minute newscast about their school. It will be taped at the local PBS studios in November then air across Colorado during December.

The goal of the Super School News program is to give kids a glimpse into the world of television news and maybe even spark interest in a future career.

"What I'm most excited about is just getting to be on TV," Trevor Swanson explains.

"I'm excited about getting to be on TV and being in a real studio with real directors, which I think is really cool," Raul Zambrano says.

Trevor and Raul are fifth grade students at Rocky Mountain Elementary School. They will be joined by fifth and sixth grade students from Thunder Mountain Elementary of Grand Junction, Shelledy Elementary of Fruita, Garnet Mesa Elementary of Delta, Gateway School in Gateway and Columbine Middle School in Montrose. Eight to ten more schools will go through the taping process in the spring.

This year PBS is getting a little financial support from Encana. With their help, PBS will be able to put nearly twice as many students through the program.

This is the 31st year for the Super School News program in Colorado.
