CLIFTON, Colo. -- A Clifton neighborhood is in shock after witnesses say a shooting has left a teenager dead.
Mesa County sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene at Susan Street shortly after 3:30. That's when they started actively investigating what they are calling a suspicious shooting death.
Deputies say the scene was 'chaotic' when they arrived, with dozens of neighbors coming out of their houses trying to see what was going on.
One neighbor we spoke with saw the devastation before deputies even arrived.
"I heard one individual pretty hysterical on the phone," Richard Chambers, a neighbor on Susan Street said. "Then there was another individual lying on the porch, coughing up blood."
Chambers said he ran out of his front door and across the street telling the teenager on the phone to wait for cops to arrive.
"They showed up about 30 seconds later, and tried CPR. But then the paramedics came and pulled out a blanket and covered him up," he said.
Chambers said during the whole ordeal, the teen on the phone kept saying it was all a terrible accident. "He just kept repeating that he was taking apart the bullet and it went off and it hit him in the chest."
But, sheriff's deputies wouldn't confirm any of that. "We don't have any of the details of the investigation," said Heather Benjamin with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office. "It's just very early."
Chambers said the incident is leaving the neighborhood on edge. He told us the teenager who died wasn't a stranger to the area at all.
"I'd seen him walking up and down the street, he was young," he said. "It's just too bad that somebody like that has to go."
For Chambers, what appears to be a tragic accident hits very close to home. He told us it's a real gut check for him and his family who enjoy hunting.
"[My kids] pick up bullets and stuff like that. And it just makes me think that maybe I should keep that stuff put up," he said.
And as the investigation continues, neighbors like Chambers can't do anything but wait and try to learn from a tragic turn of events. "I'll keep a closer eye on my kids, that's for sure," Chambers said.
Detectives expect to be in the neighborhood while they gather evidence into Thursday morning. The Mesa County Coroner said he'll be preforming an autopsy Thursday that could shed more light on what happened Wednesday afternoon.
Sheriff's deputies say no one has been arrested or taken into custody in this case.
We'll continue to follow this story on the air and online. Check back for more updates as the investigation continues.
