Mixed Feelings About Ongoing Construction

Businesses and Neighbors Weigh In on Road Work

Construction, construction, construction: everywhere you look in Grand Junction it seems like another road project is going on.

From Patterson and North Avenue to D and 1/2 Road, crews are giving the roads a facelift all across town. Many people have had it with the construction, but others are trying to look on the bright side.

At first, business owner Janet Lally had a typical reaction.

"They filled our parking lot with equipment, never asked, closed our street both from Belford and from North Avenue so nobody could get in, and it was horrible," Lally says.

But, the bridal shop owner says after she voiced her concerns to the city, things went smoothly.

"They kept their promise," she says. "They kept open Belford so you could get in, and they actually fixed some of the potholes, which is amazing."

On the other side of town, neighbors aren't so thrilled. Construction continues on D and 1/2 Road, keeping the street closed.

"It's been awful," says Judy Locke, who lives in an adjacent neighborhood. "I go down there all the time and forget and have to turn around, it just drives me crazy."

The newest phase of construction stretches between 30 and 32 Roads, and will make it safer for kids walking to school.

"It does look better, and I'm sure its a lot safer," Locke admits, "but it's just taking forever."

Lally has some words of advice for those getting the roadwork headaches.

"Just grind your teeth for a couple weeks," she says, "and it'll be over and done with and we wont have any more problems."

Locke says the end can't come soon enough.

"It's just stupid," she says. "It just takes forever."

Paving work will start up again Wednesday night between 1st and 7th Streets. The work will continue through the night.
