Open Burn Season Is Beginning

Residents Encouraged To Use Alternative Methods

POSTED: 3:52 pm MDT August 31, 2010
The fall open burning season begins in Mesa County tomorrow and continues through October 31.

All residential and commercial open burning requires a permit from either a local fire department or from the Mesa County Health Department.

Some fire districts also require permits for agricultural burning and notification of burns prior to ignition; check with your local fire department for details.

If you reside in Fruita/Loma, Grand Junction, Clifton or Palisade, please contact your corresponding fire department to obtain an open burning permit.

Contact the Mesa County Health Department for open burning permits in East and Central Orchard Mesa and Whitewater/Lands End Fire Protection District.

As an alternative to burning, Mesa County residents are encouraged to use the Mesa County Organic Materials Composting Facility located at Mesa County Solid Waste, 3071 U.S. Highway 50.

They accept leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs, unpainted/untreated lumber, hay and/or straw.

The facility is open for organic material collection and compost sales from 8am to 4:30pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

For more information on composting you can call 248-6966.
