Recent Rain Makes Ideal Living for Mosquitoes

A Spike in Insect Population Being Controlled

If you've gotten a mosquito bite over the past few weeks, you can probably thank Mother Nature for it.

Recent rains have made the air more humid allowing the bugs to fly during more hours of the day. Usually they're only out at dusk.

The rain has also made more puddles for breeding grounds. In fact, Grand River Mosquito Control has seen thousands of more bugs over the past five to ten days.

But it's a spike that they think they've got under control. "The spike came and went very quickly," said Zane McCallister with GRMC. "So we're already back down to pre-spike levels... two weeks later."

McCallister says more traps and spraying have helped get the populations down.

His group expects the mosquitoes to die off by the end of September. But, he says the risk of getting bitten is still very much alive.

He advises people to wear long sleeve shirts and pants when going outside. He also says Deet repellents work pretty well.

McCallister says all it takes is one bite for someone to contract the West Nile Virus. The Mesa County Health Department says at least three cases have been confirmed in Mesa County so far this year.
