GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Parents and teachers know kids learn at different paces.
With cuts to schools threatening class sizes, students can get left behind. One Grand Junction family looked for a more one-on-one approach through online classes.
"I think for our family this is what's working out best," mother and teacher Rebecca Bench said.
The Bench family says virtual schooling makes the most sense.
The four students, all in different grades, attend the online classes through Colorado Connections Academy. And it's all from the comfort of their home.
"I think it's pretty neat to be able to be in them and it's a lot of fun," Andrew Bench said.
The kids have never been to a school with other children.
"I think it's easier for me in this setting," Andrew said.
The sixth grader says he's able to work at his own pace.
"I'm not having to work at the classes speed. So if I finish before them, I have to wait instead of moving on."
"I like the fact that I can be home with my mom and brothers and sisters so that I can actually play with them and help them," Kerri Bench said.
The kids get instruction from mom and their own online teacher.
"I'm more comfortable with what we're doing because it gives us more flexibility with the kids," Rebecca said. "They're allowed to work at their own speed."
If you're wondering how much this sort of instruction costs...
"It's is a public school. So it's free. They provide the computers for us, those are on loan. The curriculum comes to us free of charge," Rebecca said.
She said she was nervous at first to be one of their teachers.
"I was petrified. I was really nervous that I was going to mess up."
But each child said they really enjoy it.
"She is there, I can ask her questions," Dixie Bench said.
The deadline for enrollment in Colorado Connections Academy is September 24th.
