GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A Grand Junction cancer survivor who lost her father to the same disease is trying to make a difference.
She knows first hand how hard it is to afford treatment while uninsured having gone through it just 18 months ago. In fact, she's still paying for it.
So, to help people who might face the same circumstances in the future, Tami Duran is organizing a 5K run that will benefit those people directly.
The problem? She's having trouble getting sponsors to buy into the idea.
"Cancer treatment is extremely, extremely expensive," she said relating to her personal experience. "In fact, one prescription was $1,500 a month. I mean, how can people [afford] that?"
In honor of her father, the first annual race is called "The Son Run." It's set to take place next month, September 25th. But Duran is still three sponsors short, and she needs commitments soon.
If you'd like to sponsor the race, or participate in it, visit the race's website: www.thesonrun.cfsites.org or call Duran at (970) 210-0565.
The race starts and ends at Glacier Ice Arena and runs on the riverfront trail around Blue Heron Lake. It starts at 8:00 am, September 25.
Early registration is $25 if mailed in. If you register on race day, it's $30. More information can be found on their website.
