Major changes coming to the booster seat law. Now children will have to use one until they're eight years old, regardless of how much they weigh and how tall they are.

The Colorado law takes effect Sunday the 1st.

Parents who may have taken their kids out of the seats when they turned six, will have to strap them back in.

Mother Wynona Atencio said, "I think it works, why not?"

Police won't start issuing tickets until august of next year so people can get used to it. The first year will be a warning period. If you are pulled over, an officer may ask for your child's age.

"Unfortunately, the law does not include height or weight requirements it's only age so does limit it, there's always going to be those special circumstances," Erin Rohr, with the Mesa County Health Department said.

"I understand the importance of safety, I'm really big on seat belts and car seats but when it comes to an age limit i don't agree with that," mother Brandy Hillman said. "It needs to be a weight. They need to make them a little more comfortable."

Do they bother kids?

"No, it's kind of fun because I can sit up higher and when I'm not in a booster seat I can't play games out the window," Madeline Gallegos said.

"Booster seats nowadays that they have are so versatile you can just throw them in and out of the car," said Madeline's mother, Lynn Gallegos.

According to Child Protective Services, booster seats reduce injury by 59% compared to just seat belts.

"It really will keep our kids safer for a longer period of time," Rohr said.

Mesa County Health Department is holding an event for parents and kids on August 13th. There will be booster seats available for 10 bucks. There will also be car seat technicians there to help you put them in.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the 29 1/2 & North Ave., Grand Junction location. Call 254-4112 for more information.
