GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The parents of this little boy say it's a miracle today. They are thanking Saint Mary's, all over the birth of Desmond.
A month ago, when their son was born, he wasn't breathing. Doctors and nurses took over to save his life and prevent brain damage.
The family came to Grand Junction from Ouray because they had a feeling Saint Mary's was the hospital for them. They are glad they did.
Baby Desmond was born by emergency Cesarean section at Saint Mary's on Friday. After four days, mom got to have him in her arms for the first time.
"When they asked if you want to hold him, that was the single most amazing moment of my life," said Stephanie Juth.
Stephanie and Evan's son was born not breathing. Doctors had to act fast.
"I could tell by the looks on the doctors faces things weren't going the way they were supposed to be going," Juth said.
After she gave birth, she was rushed to the OR.
"I remember this horrible feeling when I woke up their wouldn't be a baby there."
"I got little updates in the hall, very frightened for both of them," said dad, Evan Anderson.
With a new technology at Saint Mary's, doctors were poised to help.
It's called a Cool-Cap. It brings the body temperature down to prevent brain damage.
"You could see the change in just three days," said Stephanie.
As for their baby boy, he got out of the hospital a lot faster than expected.
"So far there have been no bad signs. We are willing to accept there has been some damage. We have faith, said Anderson. "We are willing to work through those things."
But Stephanie and Evan say Desmond is doing great. He's out of the hospital and has met other family members. The little boy's parents say his MRI was diagnosed as normal and according to doctors he will not need follow up checks by neurologists.
