Last Day is Sunday
POSTED: 6:31 pm MDT June 11, 2010UPDATED: 6:39 pm MDT June 11, 2010
An unforeseen issue is causing expensive problems for Glacier Ice Arena.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A huge fixture on Riverside Parkway is closing its doors. We're learning more about why Glacier Ice Arena is closing down. The arena has been a favorite spot for families since it opened in 2006. But there's a problem with the system that keeps the rink cold, and fixing it is just too costly. To cool the ice rink, fluids run through a kind of pump system. There's supposed to be a chemical in there to keep the liquid from rusting the machinery, but that chemical never got put in.Now because of rust and buildup, the system is basically ruined and fixing it would cost a fortune."If we fixed everything so we knew we had a couple years on it," says general manager Bob Coslett, "we're looking at $450,000. Probably close to $800,000 for the long term, to put it in the condition where it could operate for 20 years without any major problems."It's sad news for the whole community, but there is a glimmer of hope. The manager says the repairs could be made, with the help of a few big investors or a new owner. But coslett says no one has come forward yet.Sunday is going to be the ice rink's last day. They'll be having open skate from noon to 4 p.m. Coslett says in the best case scenario, the rink may be able to re-open for fall, but right now it's up in the air.

A printing error could be a major setback for the Colorado Caucus in Mesa County. The Mesa County Republicans say the error in the County Clerk's office will mean 75% of Republican voters will not get their voter ID cards in the mail before Tuesday’s Caucus. This means eligible voters will have to find where to go on caucus night on their own. How to find your Caucus Site.
